BIOL 450B Microbial Genetics

450. MICROBIAL GENETICS (Credit, 4 hours) (Lec., 3 hours; Lab, 3 hours). Course designed to introduce students to the molecular structure and function of prokaryotic cells, genetic mapping, and mechanisms of mutation, conjugation, transformation, transduction, and genetic recombination. Laboratory exercises involve the study of the properties and structures of DNA, the analysis of a genome segment, polymerase chain reaction, DNA sequencing, DNA fingerprinting, and the cloning of phage DNA into E. coli cells. Prerequisites: SBIO 212B (BIOL 232), SCHE 132B (CHEM 132B) and SCHE 133B (CHEM 133).
