The department seeks to prepare teacher candidates to become critical thinkers who teach from multicultural and global perspectives and model best teaching practices. Experiences are provided in academic programs, field and clinical experiences that allow teacher candidates to demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and dispositions by integrating a variety of instructional learning and problem-solving strategies. The program provides aspiring teachers a full year of Residency under an expert mentor and a competency-based program design.

Teacher Education

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction offers undergraduate, and alternate certification in Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) and add-on certification programs. The department is committed to preparing effective teachers whose students can demonstrate student learning gains. Teacher candidates must successfully complete the academic program, meet Praxis requirements, and maintain a grade point average of 2.5 in order to graduate and be recommended for teacher certification.

Initial Teacher Education Degree Offerings

Admission Requirements:

-Completion of a least 30 hours with a GPA of 2.2

Degree Completion Requirements:

-Pass all parts of Praxis II Content and PLT with a 2.5 minimum grade point average in order to graduate and be recommended for certification.

*Candidates may qualify for a Temporary Employment Permit (TEP). A TEP is granted to applicants who meet all requirements of the teacher education program for initial teaching certificate with exception of passing the required exams. Applicant must have earned scores on required exams within 10% of BESE-adopted passing scores.
