MEEN 374B Aerodynamics I

374B. AERODYNAMICS (Credit, 3 hours). Principles of fluid mechanics are applied directly to airplane wing sections to produce aerodynamic lift and drag. Students are also introduced to similarity laws and dimensional analysis of wings, fuselage, and propellers, etc. Students also learn to use computer-aided analysis and design of wing sections. This course provides an introduction to the fundamental principles of aerodynamics and the behavior of airflow around bodies. Students study fluid properties, conservation laws, and governing equations for inviscid and viscous flows. Topics include Bernoulli’s equation, potential flow theory, circulation and lift generation, airfoil and wing aerodynamics, boundary layers, flow separation, drag mechanisms, and compressible flow fundamentals. Students also learn to use computer-aided analysis and design of wing sections. Prerequisites: MEEN 271B and MEEN 312B.
