MEEN 301B Thermodynamics II

301B. THERMODYNAMICS II (Credit, 3 hours). Topics covered include engineering applications of thermodynamics; mixtures, two phase systems, imperfect gases, reactive systems, and thermodynamics properties. Individual/team projects are undertaken. The course builds on the fundamentals of thermodynamics to explore advanced concepts in energy conversion, power cycles, and mixture behavior. Topics include gas and vapor power cycles, refrigeration and heat pump systems, gas mixtures, psychrometrics, chemical reactions and combustion, and an introduction to chemical equilibrium. Students apply the first and second laws to complex engineering systems, evaluate performance metrics, and analyze real-world deviations from ideal behavior. Emphasis is placed on problem-solving, engineering judgment, and the integration of thermodynamic principles into practical applications such as engines, turbines, refrigeration units, and energy systems. Computational tools and design-oriented assignments reinforce analytical concepts. Prerequisite: MEEN 300B.
