531 CRIN: Advanced Diagnosis & Correction of Reading Difficulties (3 Credit Hours) This course examines the multiple facets of diagnosing and correcting reading problems among students in urban classroom settings. It is offered as hands-on, skills embedded, advanced reading course that builds upon the skills learned in CRIN 503: Foundations of Reading Instruction. This course teaches candidates concrete methods for identifying, monitoring, and correcting reading difficulties. The importance of direct and differentiated instruction, reciprocal teaching, scaffolding, research based motivational learning activities, and abundant practice in the act of reading is stressed throughout this course. Candidates will be required to plan, design, and implement a logitudinal intervention plan that addresses the needs of students in urban classrooms. The Early Literac Intervention Plan/Case Study is multi-faceted and very detailed; the data will be shared with students, parents and school personnel. Teacher candidates will use the resulting data to design an evidence based resource guide for use by classroom teachers.
