274. ELEMENTARY STATISTICS (Credit, 3 hours).

An introduction to descriptive statistics, probability, and statistical reasoning as applied to the behavioral and social sciences. The course emphasizes the organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of quantitative data using statistical software, including the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) or equivalent statistical applications. Topics include frequency distributions, graphical data presentation, measures of central tendency and variability, percentiles, standard scores, the normal distribution, basic probability concepts, and introductory inferential statistics. Emphasis is placed on developing statistical literacy and interpreting research findings in the behavioral and social sciences. Prerequisite: MATH 129B or higher, or SMAT 120B or higher, with a minimum grade of C in one of the two prerequisite courses.
