General Education Requirements
The General Education Program of Excellence (GEPE) at Southern University is designed to help students become well-rounded, educated individuals. It focuses on building the knowledge, critical thinking skills, communication abilities, and learning habits needed to succeed in college, careers, and everyday life.
A Southern University graduate is someone who has developed the ability to think independently, solve problems, adapt to new situations, and communicate effectively. GEPE works alongside your major courses to give you both specialized career knowledge and a strong educational foundation.
The program includes core and foundation courses that are challenging, engaging, and relevant. These courses help students:
• Think critically and solve problems
• Communicate effectively through writing and speaking
• Understand ethical values and responsible decision-making
• Expand cultural and global awareness
• Develop intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning skills
• Make informed decisions both in their careers and personal lives
To graduate from Southern University Baton Rouge, students must complete 60 credit hours of General Education requirements, which include the following areas:
Core Curriculum Requirements (39 Hours)
English Composition – 6 Hours
Develop strong writing, reading, and communication skills.
Mathematics – 6 Hours
Build problem-solving, analytical, and quantitative reasoning skills.
Natural Sciences – 9 Hours
Students must complete:
• Two courses within either Biology or Physical Science that include a lab component
• One additional course in the other science area
This requirement ensures students study both life sciences and physical sciences.
Humanities – 9 Hours
Three courses are required, including:
• One Literature course
• Beginning or Intermediate Language courses
Possible subjects include:
• Argumentation and Debate
• Cultural History
• Speech and Public Speaking
• Philosophy
• History
• Religious Studies
• Literature
• Language Studies
• Mass Media
• Shakespeare
• Women's and Gender Studies
Social Sciences – 6 Hours
Two courses are required, including one sophomore-level course.

• Contemporary Global Issues
• Political Theory
• State and Local Government
• Human Societies
Fine Arts – 3 Hours
Students choose from courses such as:
• Architecture
• Landscape Architecture
• Cinema and Film
• Dance Appreciation
• Fine Arts
• Art History
• Interior Design History
• Music Appreciation
• Music Theory
• Music History
• Theater and Dramatic Arts
Foundation Courses (21 Hours)
21 additional credit hours are required and are determined by your intended major or field of study. These courses help prepare you for advanced coursework within your academic program.
