MEEN 442B Heat Transfer

442B. HEAT TRANSFER (Credit, 3 hours). Presents an introduction to heat transfer by conduction, convection, and radiation; and steady an unsteady state heat flow, condensation, and boiling. Individual/team projects will be assigned. Presents the fundamental mechanisms of heat transfer—conduction, convection, and radiation—and their application to engineering systems. Students learn to formulate and solve heat transfer problems using differential equations, empirical correlations, and numerical tools. Topics include steady and transient conduction, thermal resistance networks, fin analysis, forced and natural convection, boiling, heat exchangers, radiation heat transfer, and combined-mode problems. Group and individual projects assigned reinforce concepts learned in class. Prerequisites: MEEN 312B.
