VA Benefit Chapters and Exemptions
Chapter 31: Veteran Readiness & Employment (VR&E) serves disabled veterans with service-connected disabilities and pays for tuition, fees, books, supplies, plus case management
Chapter 33: Post-9/11 GI Bill® serves Veterans/active duty with qualifying service after 9/11 and pays tuition (up to 100%), housing (BAH), book stipend
Chapter 35: Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) serves dependents/spouses of disabled or deceased veterans and pays a monthly stipend (student pays tuition)
Chapter 30: Montgomery GI Bill® (Active Duty) serves veterans who paid into MGIB pays a monthly a stipend
Chapter 1606: MGIB-Selected Reserve serves Active reservists and pays a monthly stipend
Louisiana State Education Exemptions
• Title 29 Dependent Tuition Exemption: Waives tuition and school-imposed fees at state-supported colleges, universities, and vocational schools for qualifying spouses, surviving spouses, and children.
o Eligibility: Veterans must have died on active duty, died of a service-connected disability, be classified as POW/MIA, or have a VA disability rating of at least 90% (or 100% individual
unemployability).
o Can it be used with other benefits? Yes. The Title 29 waiver can be stacked with federal VA benefits like Chapter 35 (DEA) or the Post-9/11 GI Bill®
• State Tuition Exemption Program (STEP): Provides full tuition exemption at state schools for active, drilling members of the Louisiana National Guard.
o Can it be used with other benefits? Yes. It can be used alongside Chapter 1606 and Post 9/11® (Montgomery GI Bill® - Selected Reserve).
