Baccalaureate Degree Requirements
Students must meet the University’s minimum standards as well as any additional requirements set by their college or school.
Minimum Graduation Requirements
To earn a baccalaureate degree from Southern University, students must complete:
120 minimum semester hours (excluding remedial and repeated courses)
Minimum GPA of 2.00 overall, in the major, and within the college/school
A grade of “C” or better in all major courses and in English 101B (110B) and 102B (111B)

The Southern University Board of Supervisors confers degrees upon recommendation of the University leadership and faculty.

Procedures for Obtaining a Diploma
Before the Final Semester
Students must submit a formal graduation application through their major department. The application is then reviewed and approved by the dean and forwarded to the Registrar for final certification.
Commencement Eligibility
To participate in commencement, students must:
Complete all required coursework, including verified transfer or cross-registered credits
Pass all required departmental exams, capstone projects, and assessments
Satisfy the Writing Proficiency requirement
Clear all financial obligations at least 72 hours before commencement
Students who do not meet degree requirements may not participate and must reapply for graduation in a future semester.
Students completing requirements during the summer term receive diplomas at the end of the summer.
Graduation-Only Enrollment
Students not enrolled in classes during their intended graduation semester must enroll in “Graduation Only” (0 credit hours) and pay associated fees.
Additional Requirements
A non-refundable graduation fee is required.
Students must notify their dean if they do not plan to attend commencement.
