The aim of the program is to produce students who can demonstrate a general knowledge of the histories of the peoples of the world and use the tools of historical research to expand the fields of knowledge. Students completing the baccalaureate in history will adequately demonstrate a competency in history by expressing themselves orally, and in writing, in any given arena.
Undergraduate history majors prepare for career opportunities as educators, researchers, communicators or editors, information managers, advocates, or even businesspersons. They may also use history as a major in preparation for such professional schools, such as law and theology, as well as graduate work in history and other fields. Student history majors are strongly encouraged to minor in related disciplines or others with the consent of their advisors.
A major in history consists of at least 30 hours of history (200 level and above, exclusive of freshman courses), consisting of required courses (12 hours) and 18 hours of history electives (200 level and above.
REQUIRED COURSES:
History 224, 225, 400, and 414
The 18 hours of history electives must include a minimum of 9 hours of non-U.S. history from at least two of the following general geographical areas: Africa, Asia, Europe or Latin America.
A minor in history consists of 18 hours, including History 224, History 225, and 12 hours of history electives.
OTHER SPECIFIC DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
In addition to completing the curriculum for the baccalaureate in History, Student history majors must take a written departmental comprehensive examination to determine competency in the field before completion of the first semester of the senior year after all required history courses (SHIS 224, SHIS 225, HIST 400 and HIST 414) are completed. A program committee will supervise and direct this examination.
Students must also demonstrate a competency in computer literacy by passing an appropriate course or examination. They must earn a minimum grade of “C” in all history courses, as well as in Freshman Composition (SENL 101 and 102, thus fulfilling the Writing Proficiency Requirement), perform 60 hours of community service (Service Learning [SVLR 400], 3 credit hours, may be used to satisfy the mandatory 60 hr. community service requirement), and pass a three-hour course in the African-American Experience. Additionally, students must complete and submit a graduation application by the scheduled deadline, as well as all other necessary related forms.
TRANSFER CREDIT
Students who transfer from other divisions of the University and accredited colleges and universities must meet the same eligibility requirements stated above. The department will determine the acceptability of transfers credits to the degree program and may decline if those requirements are not met.
