Degree Requirements
Degree Requirements of the Department: Applicants to the music program must audition in a major area of performance for admittance to one of the music curricula. In addition, entering freshmen are required to take a placement examination testing aural ability and knowledge of elementary theory. Provisional admittance is granted to applicants whose placement results indicate the need for preparatory study in theory and/or performance. All students are encouraged to have pre-college work in basic theory as well as study in performance areas, i.e., piano, voice and instrumental.
Music majors are required to attend the weekly performance and recital class, which is part of the applied music and departmental requirement. The performance requirement also includes attendance at a stipulated number of faculty and other artist recitals, performances by departmental ensembles, and other specified performances on and off campus. Majors must fulfill the performance requirement for the duration of enrollment in applied music or for a minimum of eight semesters. Minors must fulfill the same requirements for the duration of enrollment in applied music. Majors are required to be in continuous enrollment in applied music through completion of the senior recital during the last semester in residence, which is a requirement for majors in the Bachelor of Music with a concentration in education may prepare a senior project in lieu of the senior recital.

Visual Arts Minor Program Description:
The Visual Arts Minor at Southern University and A&M College provides an immersive studio experience that supports creative growth, hands on learning, and professional skill development. Students explore a range of visual art practices, including painting, drawing, printmaking, computer graphics, ceramics, sculpture, and basic design.
Working in state of the art studios, students learn within a supportive community of artists and are encouraged to experiment, collaborate, and pursue interdisciplinary projects across media. Faculty and visiting artists guide students as they develop their own artistic voice and take creative risks.
Students also participate in enrichment activities such as field trips to local galleries and museums, involvement in the student art club, and workshops that connect them with the regional art community. A key component of the program is the opportunity to exhibit artwork in the Frank Hayden Gallery, where students gain hands on experience with installation, lighting, and public presentation.
A lab fee is required for all studio courses, and studio equipment will be provided through the college bookstore at the start of each semester.
The Visual Arts minor prepares students with the technical skills, creative confidence, and real world experience needed for future work in graphic design, illustration, printmaking, creative consultants, art directors, curators, and of course visual artists showcasing their artwork in galleries and museums.
Visual Arts Minor Requirements:
To earn a visual arts minor, a student is required to complete 18 credit hours in our course offerings. This includes two required courses,
SFIA 111B Basic Design and
ARTS 130B Drawing, which totals to 6 credit hours. Students must then choose four course electives from the list below to complete the remaining 12 credits. There is a total of 24 credit hours offered in the Visual Arts Program.
